Very few credit unions can boast that they have
been in continuous existence, serving their
members, for 60 years. ChevronWest Credit
Union is proud to be one...
It all began back in 1950 when a group of employees at the Chevron Salt
Lake Refinery in North Salt Lake, UT gathered to organize a credit union for
the common benefit of what was at the time Chevron West Oil—the
Mountain West division for Standard Oil of California. Though the division
headquarters were located in Denver, CO, the Salt Lake City employees
rallied together to create the new credit union and the Denver employees
soon joined. It came to be that the headquarters for “ChevronWest Credit
Union” would be located at the Chevron Salt Lake Refinery.
The early years were a struggle to keep the credit union up and running. In
addition to the volunteer efforts of the Board of Directors and Supervisory
Committee, many members participated with the operations, donating
accounting skills and clerical tasks to help get the credit union established.
Their tremendous loyalty saved time and money and helped build a strong
foundation upon which the credit union stands to this day. Chevron West Oil
eventually rolled into their parent company, ChevronTexaco. Today, however,
ChevronWest Credit Union remains independent and happily serves the
needs of nearly 6000 members worldwide.
After serving for over 50 years on site at the Chevron Salt Lake Refinery,
ChevronWest Credit Union moved its headquarters just minutes
away to Woods Cross, UT in 2007. At the same time, the credit union also expanded
to open two new branches: a satellite office within the gates of the Chevron
Salt Lake Refinery to continue serving members employed by the Refinery
and an additional branch serving members residing in Salt Lake City, UT.
Including an existing office in Denver, CO, ChevronWest Credit Union now
operates four full-service branches with phenomenal rates and personalized
service on checking, savings, loans and electronic banking.
Our Purpose
ChevronWest Credit Union is a non-profit organization, serving members as
a credit cooperative. Members pool funds together and make loans to one
another at very reasonable rates. In the beginning we were formed to provide
relief to oil workers and their families. That hasn’t changed today. Everything
we do is aimed at building members, and their family, a better future.
Membership is open to any family member of an existing member, as well
as the employees (and family members) of ChevronTexaco and affiliates—including Chevron Mining Inc., Chevron Pipe Line Company and the
Chevron Salt Lake Refinery. Membership provides ownership in our
organization. As a member/owner, members elect a Board of Directors to
serve without pay and help oversee the operation of the credit union. The
Supervisory Committee, composed of volunteers who act as liaisons with
members and management, provide additional checks and balances. All
volunteers are existing members who believe in people helping people
achieve financial freedom. ChevronWest Credit Union appreciates the
opportunity to serve members’ financial needs and strives to create a
remarkable experience for each, and every, one.
